Tips

  • Never place your bio or outline on the podium before you plan on going up to speak. If you do, you run the risk of having the speakers who precede you (or the person introducing you) accidentally pick up and walk off with your outline! Believe it or not this happens all the time!
  • Use anecdotes and analogies. Bring your presentation to life. Make it exciting; make it human and real. Put a part of yourself into the story.
  • Never, never, never lie, stretch the truth or fake it to an audience or reporter. If you do not know the answer to question, say so. But offer to get an answer – and do so.
  • Avoid jargon; speak English.

Visual aids are a great way to keep your audience's attention and help the audience retain information from your speech. Be sure to avoid the common pitfalls when using visual aids in your speech.

  • Make sure your visual aid is large enough to be seen by the entire audience.
  • Use fonts that are readable and avoid using too many fonts.
  • Avoid using the color yellow. It is too difficult to be seen.
  • Always practice using your visual aids prior to giving the presentation.
  • When using multimedia- i.e., PowerPoint- ALWAYS set-up and go through your slides before the audience arrives. Have a back-up plan in case of an unforeseen technological problem and you are unable to use your multimedia visual aid.
